The first week of popular demonstrations in south Syria have concentrated in Suwayda province. Protests in the Druze-majority region first emerged in response to the regime’s gross mismanagement of the collapsing economy and poor living conditions, but have quickly escalated to include calls for the overthrow of the regime. Demonstrations were also held in nearby Daraa province, and have since spread to areas beyond the south.
